Whitefish Island

A small island in the St. Marys River rapids, accessible via a footbridge from the Sault Ste. Marie Canal area. The island has been an Anishinaabe fishing ground and cultural site for millennia, and the whitefish runs in the rapids remain significant. It is now a Parks Canada National Historic Site managed in partnership with local First Nations.

Walking out to the island gives you a close look at the St. Marys rapids and good views of both the Canadian and American shores. The signage explains the island's history and the traditional fishery. It is a quiet, uncrowded spot, especially in the shoulder season.

A story
Whitefish Island is a National Historic Site recognizing it as a traditional gathering place of the Anishinaabe people, who fished for whitefish in the St. Marys rapids here for thousands of years. The island sits in the rapids between the two cities and is accessible only from the Canadian side via a footbridge.
