Southampton's beach runs for nearly a kilometre along the western shore, a broad flat expanse of pale sand that shelves gently into Lake Huron's shallow water. The lake stays warmish through July and August, and the beach draws families from across Grey and Bruce counties on summer weekends.
The sunsets here are famous across Ontario. Lake Huron's western orientation puts the sun directly over the water at dusk, and on clear evenings the light reflects off the lake in long golden bands. The beach is quietest in the hour before sunset, when day-trippers have mostly left and the light is at its best.
