Southampton

Lake Huron beach town on the Saugeen River, known for sandy sunsets and cottager ease.

Southampton is a small beach town on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, at the mouth of the Saugeen River, on Ontario's Bruce Peninsula. It has a loyal following among Ontario cottagers and summer visitors who come for the wide sandy beaches and the easy pace of a classic lakeside town.

The Lake Huron beach is the main draw — broad, clean, and facing west for the sunsets that Lake Huron is known for across the province. The town has a low-key main street with shops, ice cream, and summer restaurants. The Chantry Island lighthouse, on a protected bird sanctuary island just offshore, is accessible by guided boat tour in summer. Southampton is about two and a half hours from Toronto, making it a popular weekend destination for city dwellers.

Getting There

Southampton is about two and a half hours north of Toronto by car, via Highway 400 north to Barrie and then Highway 26 and 10 to Owen Sound, continuing on Highway 21 along the Lake Huron shore. There is no rail service. Greyhound and other coach lines serve Owen Sound (about 45 minutes south), from which a taxi or rental car is needed to reach Southampton. Most visitors drive.

Things to Do

Southampton's main attraction is the beach and the lake. The long sandy strand on Lake Huron is one of the finest on the Ontario shore, facing west for the famous sunset views. The Chantry Island lighthouse, reached by summer boat tour, offers a combination of Lake Huron scenery and Victorian heritage architecture. The Saugeen River, which meets the lake at the north end of town, is popular for fishing and canoeing.

When to Go

Southampton is a summer destination. The beach season runs from late June through early September, when the lake is warmest and the town is fully open for business. Canada Day (1 July) weekend and the August long weekend are the busiest times; book accommodation months ahead for those dates.

The shoulder season — late May to mid-June, and September — offers cooler temperatures and quieter beaches, with most restaurants and shops still open. The Chantry Island boat tours run from late May to mid-September. Winter closes most tourism-oriented businesses; the town reverts to a quiet year-round community.
