Souris Beach

Souris Beach Gateway Park, just west of town, is a clean, uncrowded beach on the Northumberland Strait with the characteristic red sand of eastern PEI. The water here is warmer than on the Atlantic-facing beaches of Nova Scotia — the Northumberland Strait acts as a shallow inland sea that heats up through the summer — making this one of the warmer swimming beaches in Atlantic Canada.

The beach is backed by red sandstone cliffs and dunes. It gets busy on summer weekends with local families but never reaches the crowds of PEI's more famous beaches on the north shore. The lighthouse at the edge of the harbour is visible from the beach, and on clear days the coast of Nova Scotia is a faint line on the southern horizon.
