The Écomusée d'Anticosti is the useful indoor stop in Port-Menier, with exhibits on the island's ecology, settlement history and the period when French chocolatier Henri Menier owned and developed Anticosti.
It is modest, but it helps explain why this remote island has such an unusual human story: private ownership, introduced deer, logging, hunting camps and one small village trying to hold the centre.
