Gaspé, Birthplace of Canada

This waterfront interpretation site marks the place where Jacques Cartier raised a cross in 1534 and claimed the land for the French crown. The modern site mixes the symbolic monument with reconstructed village buildings, interpreters, local products, and summer events.

It is not a grand monument, but it gives Gaspé its historic hook. See it before the museum and the rest of the peninsula's story makes more sense.
