The large Celtic cross was raised in 1909 as a memorial to the fever victims of 1847. It stands above the river, visible and blunt, and gives the island's Irish story a physical landmark beyond the cemetery itself.
Come here after seeing the quarantine buildings. The cross is simpler than the guided exhibits, but it carries the weight of descendants returning to mark a place that had been both gateway and graveyard.
