The Irish Cemetery is the emotional centre of Grosse Isle. More than 5,000 people are buried on the island, many of them Irish Famine emigrants who survived the Atlantic crossing only to die in quarantine.
It is a sombre stop, and it should be. The cemetery turns a large historical number into a place you can stand in, with the river still moving past as it did when the ships arrived.
