The Lazaretto is the surviving isolation hospital from the 1847 crisis. It is one of the plainest structures on the island, and that plainness makes it more unsettling than a grand memorial.
This is where the story narrows from immigration policy to beds, fever, and the impossible numbers of sick people arriving by ship. It is a necessary stop if you want Grosse Isle to be more than a scenic cruise.
