The Abbaye Sainte-Marie des Deux-Montagnes is an active Benedictine monastery whose large stone church anchors the centre of Mont-Laurier. Founded in 1947, the abbey community follows the Rule of Saint Benedict and maintains traditional forms of Gregorian chant — the monks' liturgical singing at daily offices is the most memorable experience available to visitors. The church is open to visitors attending services; guided visits of part of the monastery can be arranged in advance.
The abbey shop sells products made by the community: honeys, jams, chocolates, and devotional items. Benedictine monasteries in Quebec have a long tradition of artisanal production, and the abbey's products are genuinely good. The peaceful enclosed garden, visible from the church courtyard, reflects the community's commitment to contemplative life.
