The oldest part of the city, Old Montréal stretches along the St. Lawrence waterfront and contains some of the finest 17th and 18th-century architecture in North America. The cobblestone streets around Place Jacques-Cartier fill with street musicians, café terrasses and tourists in summer, but the neighbourhood rewards a slower wander any time of year. Head to the Old Port for waterfront views, then explore the narrow side streets to find the Basilique Notre-Dame, the Château Ramezay and the Pointe-à-Callière museum.
