Montreal's Village — the Gay Village — is one of the largest and most vibrant LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods in North America. The heart of it is a stretch of Sainte-Catherine Street Est between rue Amherst and Papineau, which becomes a pedestrian zone in summer and fills with terrasses, street art, and a festive energy that runs from June through September. The neighbourhood also hosts Fierté Montréal (Montreal Pride), one of the largest Pride festivals in the world, typically in late July or early August.
Beyond its identity as a queer district, the Village has a strong community character and a good concentration of bars, restaurants, and cultural venues that draw a mixed crowd. The street art is extensive and changes regularly. Beaudry metro station is the local landmark — the columns inside are painted in rainbow stripes. The neighbourhood is at its most active on summer evenings; in winter it quiets considerably.
