Pointe-au-Pere is the strongest single reason to stop in Rimouski. The site combines the Pointe-au-Pere Lighthouse National Historic Site, the Onondaga submarine, and the Empress of Ireland Museum on a windswept point above the St. Lawrence.
The Empress of Ireland sank offshore in 1914 after a collision in fog, with a loss of life that still shocks when you see it set against the calm river outside. The submarine visit is more physical: narrow bunks, low ceilings, pipes, controls, and the clear sense that military life below water was not romantic. Allow two to three hours if you want to see the whole site.
