Chambly Canal

Historic canal on the Richelieu River, with locks, towpath cycling, and winter skating near town.

The Chambly Canal is a nineteenth-century waterway along the Richelieu River, built to connect Lake Champlain with the Chambly Basin. Near Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the canal gives the city one of its best easy walks.

In summer, follow the towpath by bike or on foot. In winter, the city sometimes turns the canal near the lock into a lit skating route, which is a very Quebec way to use an old piece of transport infrastructure.
