Old Saint-Jean is the part of the city to walk rather than drive through. The streets near the Richelieu River hold the museums, older buildings, restaurants, and heritage-tour material that give Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu its sense of place.
It is not a preserved old town on the scale of Quebec City or Montreal, but it is pleasant and useful as the connective tissue between the fort, the canal, and the riverfront.
