Meewasin Valley Trail

The Meewasin Valley Trail follows both sides of the South Saskatchewan River for over 80 kilometres through and beyond Saskatoon, making it the city's best outdoor resource. The most popular stretch runs along the riverbank between the bridges in the city core — wide, paved, and busy with cyclists, runners, and walkers in summer. The views across the water to the old tree-lined neighbourhoods on the opposite bank give Saskatoon much of its character.

Beyond the central stretch, the trail extends north toward Wanuskewin Heritage Park through natural prairie coulees that feel surprisingly wild given their proximity to downtown. Rent a bike from any of several shops downtown and ride as far south as you want; the trail continues for miles in both directions. In winter, parts of the trail are groomed for cross-country skiing.

A story
Meewasin is a Cree word meaning "beautiful valley." The trail authority was created in 1979 as a joint conservation project between the city, the University of Saskatchewan, and the province — an early and successful example of urban river corridor preservation. The trail now covers more than 80 kilometres along both banks of the South Saskatchewan, threading through city parkland, natural coulees, and historic districts.
