When to Go

Saskatoon has dramatic seasonal extremes. Summer (June through August) is the time to visit: warm to hot days, long prairie sunshine, and the full range of outdoor activities available along the Meewasin Valley Trail and at Wanuskewin. Average highs in July reach around 26°C (79°F), and the light lasts until well past 10 PM near the solstice.

Winter is brutal. Temperatures regularly drop below -30°C (-22°F) in January and February, and the wind chill makes it feel colder still. The city functions through it — Saskatoonians are matter-of-fact about winter — but as a visitor there is limited reason to choose the coldest months. Spring arrives with surprising speed in April and May; autumn (September and October) offers golden prairie light and cooling temperatures before the cold sets in.

The Saskatoon Exhibition in August is the city's main summer fair. Canada Day on July 1st draws large riverside celebrations.
