Spellman McLaughlin Home

The Spellman McLaughlin Home in Spot Bay is one of the few surviving examples of traditional Caymanian wooden architecture on Cayman Brac. Built around 1900 from imported pine and local hardwoods, it has a steep gable roof designed to shed hurricane rain, deep verandas on two sides, and storm shutters that still close fully against the weather.

The house is now a listed heritage building maintained by the Cayman Islands National Trust. It is not always open but the exterior is visible from the road; check at the Cayman Brac Museum to see if a tour can be arranged. A handful of similar but unrestored homes survive in the same area — the cluster gives a sense of what Brac villages looked like before concrete construction took over after the 1932 hurricane.
