Rincón de la Vieja is the volcanic day trip that makes Liberia more than an airport town. The national park protects an active massif in the Guanacaste Cordillera, with dry forest on the lower slopes and a geothermal landscape of fumaroles, bubbling mud, hot springs, and sulphur vents. It is one of the easiest places in Costa Rica to see volcanic activity without a long expedition.
The Las Pailas sector is the usual focus, with trails that loop past steam vents and mineral-stained ground before reaching forest and waterfall options. Start early, carry water, and check current trail restrictions, because volcanic activity and weather can close routes. Even with closures, the mix of heat, forest, and restless ground is memorable.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park is one of the strongest reasons to base yourself in Liberia. The park combines volcanic vents, boiling mud pots, dry tropical forest, waterfalls, and trails under the long shoulder of an active volcano.
It is more varied than a single viewpoint, so choose your entrance and trail according to time, heat, and fitness. Start early, carry water, and check current access: volcanic activity and weather can affect routes. The reward is a compact lesson in Costa Rica's wilder geology.
The park is about an hour from Liberia on a road that turns rough near the end, and there is no public transport to the gates — most people come on a tour or drive. Two sectors are open: Las Pailas for the geothermal loop and the waterfalls, Santa María for the hot springs and the quieter trails.
