Fuerte de la Punta

A second of Baracoa's three Spanish forts, at the western tip of the town. Built in 1803 to cover the approaches from the west, it is the smallest of the trio and now functions as a state-run restaurant. The setting — squat thick walls with cannons still in place, looking out across the bay to El Yunque — is more memorable than the cooking.

Sunset here is one of the best in town, with the silhouette of the flat-topped mountain framed by the fort's loopholes and the Atlantic surf breaking just below the walls.
