Malecón

Baracoa's malecón is a long stretch of seawall along the José Martí avenue, where the Atlantic breaks over the road on rough days and the locals gather in the cool of the evening to talk, fish, and watch the sunset over the bay. It is less photogenic than the Havana version — no faded mansions — but it has the unmistakable feel of a small Caribbean port-town at the end of the world.

Walk it east to west to take in the cathedral, both seaside forts, and the start of the road toward El Yunque. There are a few private cafés and snack stands along the way; the seafront is the social heart of town after dark.
