Miramar

Leafy residential district of embassies and pre-revolution mansions west of Vedado

Miramar is the wealthiest neighbourhood in Havana — a broad grid of tree-lined avenues west of Vedado where pre-revolution mansions, now converted to embassies and government offices, sit behind high walls and gardens. The Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) is the main artery: a divided boulevard planted with royal palms and lined with some of the grandest houses in Cuba.

After the revolution, Miramar's wealthy residents largely left for Miami, and their properties were nationalised. Today the neighbourhood hosts most of Havana's diplomatic missions, some of the better paladares (private restaurants), and the main business district that has developed since the 1990s. The Marina Hemingway is at the western end of Miramar, where you can sometimes see sailboats from the United States.
