By air. Frank País International Airport (HOG) lies about 13 kilometres south of the city centre. It handles direct charter and scheduled flights from Canada, the UK, Germany, and other European countries, mostly serving package tourists headed for the beach resorts. Domestic flights connect Holguín to Havana on Cubana and Aerogaviota, though schedules and availability are unreliable and booking in advance is advisable.
By bus. Viazul, Cuba's tourist bus service, runs coaches between Holguín and Havana (roughly 12 hours), Santiago de Cuba (around 2.5 hours), and other major cities. Tickets should be booked ahead, particularly in high season. The Viazul terminal is on Avenida de los Libertadores in the city.
By rail. A rail line connects Holguín to Havana and Santiago de Cuba, but Cuban train services are slow and schedules are highly uncertain. The journey to Havana can take 16 hours or more. Most travellers use buses or fly.
From the resorts. Travellers flying into Holguín on package tours are typically transferred directly to Guardalavaca or other beach resorts by coach. If you want to spend time in the city, you will need to arrange your own transport — taxis are available at the airport and are the most practical option for the 65-kilometre drive to Guardalavaca.
