San Pedro de Macorís is 70 kilometres east of Santo Domingo on the main coastal highway (Autovía del Este). By car or guagua (minibus) from the capital, the journey takes around 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Buses depart from the Parque Enriquillo terminal in Santo Domingo throughout the day; the fare is minimal and the journey comfortable enough.
From Punta Cana (approximately 100 kilometres to the east), shared taxis and guaguas connect via the same highway. There is no airport serving San Pedro directly — the nearest airports are Las Américas International outside Santo Domingo and Punta Cana to the east.
Within the city, motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) are the primary local transport. Agree on a price before getting on — short trips within the centre should cost very little. Taxis are available from the hotels for longer runs.
