Laguna de Alegría is the reason most travellers come. The lake sits in the crater of Tecapa volcano, and minerals in the clay and water can give it a vivid green colour in good light.
The lake is shallow near the edges and often smells of sulphur, so think of it as a volcanic landscape rather than a swimming hole. The walk down into the crater is part of the experience.
