Cerro Verde Cloud Forest Trail

Short forest walk around Cerro Verde's extinct cone, with viewpoints toward Izalco and Santa Ana.

The Cerro Verde Cloud Forest Trail is the gentle option in Los Volcanes National Park. It loops through humid highland forest around the extinct Cerro Verde cone, with viewpoints that frame Izalco, Santa Ana, and Lake Coatepeque when the cloud lifts.

This is the walk to choose if you are not doing the Santa Ana crater hike or if weather closes the higher routes. The trail is short, but the forest is lush and the air is a relief after the heat lower down.

A story
Cerro Verde means "green hill", and the name fits: unlike the bare black cone of Izalco beside it, this extinct volcano is wrapped in cool forest. That contrast is the whole park in miniature, with young volcanic violence on one side and mossy old-growth calm on the other.
