San Miguel's main draw is its setting: Volcán Chaparrastique dominates the skyline to the west, and the surrounding lowlands hide two wildlife-rich lagoons within easy reach of the city. The historic centre has a fine cathedral and a central park that fills with activity in the evenings. Every November the entire city transforms for the Carnaval de San Miguel — the biggest street carnival in Central America.
