Russell Glacier is the more intimate ice encounter east of Kangerlussuaq. Instead of simply seeing the great white edge of the ice sheet, you stand near a glacier front, with blue cracks, dirty moraine, meltwater, and cold air coming off the ice.
It is about 25 km from town and commonly visited by tour vehicle, bicycle, or a long summer hike by fit travellers. Keep well back from the ice face and meltwater channels; falling ice and unstable silt are not theoretical risks here.
