The Greenland Ice Sheet is the reason to stay in Kangerlussuaq instead of treating it as an airport. A gravel road runs east through tundra and moraine country toward the ice, ending near the place often called Point 660.
The scale is hard to absorb: ice not as a glacier tongue in a valley, but as the edge of a continent-sized mass. Go with local transport or a tour unless you are well prepared; weather, distance, and glacial terrain can turn serious quickly.
