Kapisillit Salmon River

The salmon river drains a small valley into the Kapisillit fjord a few hundred metres from the village. It is the reason the place has a name and a reason in itself for serious anglers to come, though numbers caught each summer are low and the fishery is closely managed.

Walk up the river on foot; the lower kilometre or two is easy. Permits are issued through the local hunters' association in Nuuk. Even without fishing, the riverside path is the prettiest short walk from the village, threading birch scrub and small lakes.

A story
The Kapisillit river holds the only confirmed spawning population of Atlantic salmon in Greenland. The fish are thought to be a relict from a warmer post-glacial period and have survived in this single river. The population is small and tightly regulated; modest catch-and-release fishing is permitted by permit in summer.
