Greenland Brewhouse

The Greenland Brewhouse is a small craft brewery in Narsaq that claims the distinction of being the first brewery ever established in Greenland. It produces a handful of beers using glacial meltwater, and the taproom offers tastings and tours. For such a remote and small community, it is a surprisingly characterful place.

The brewery is a good destination in itself on a cold day, and the beers — while not especially complex — are notable for their provenance. The glacial water gives them a clean, mineral quality. Check opening times before visiting, as hours vary with the season and the operation is small.

A story
The Greenland Brewhouse was founded in 2005, making it Greenland's first commercial brewery. The water used in the brewing comes from glacial ice — some of it over 2,000 years old — collected from icebergs calving into the fjord. The brewery produces a small range of beers and was for many years the only source of locally brewed beer on the island.
