Pompierre Beach

Pompierre is generally considered the finest beach on Terre-de-Haut and one of the best in the Lesser Antilles. It sits on the eastern side of the island, a crescent of pale sand in a bay that is almost always calm and clear. The water is shallow enough for children and transparent enough to reveal the sandy bottom and the occasional passing fish without snorkelling gear.

The beach is reached by a path over the hill from the village — a walk of about 15 minutes that keeps car traffic away and limits the crowds somewhat. There is no shade on the beach itself, so bring sun protection. The views back toward the village and the bay from the path are worth stopping for. A small beach bar sometimes operates here in high season but do not count on it being open.

A story
Pompierre lies on the calmer eastern side of Terre-de-Haut, sheltered from the Atlantic swell by the island's topography. The beach has been consistently rated among the finest in the French West Indies and occasionally appears in international rankings of Caribbean beaches. Its relative difficulty of access — a 15-minute walk over a hill — keeps it less crowded than its reputation might suggest.
