Monterrico Beach is a long strip of black volcanic sand facing the open Pacific. It is striking, especially early or late in the day, when the sand is cool enough to walk and the light catches the surf.
Treat the ocean with caution. The beach drops steeply, the waves break hard, and the undertow can be dangerous. This is a beach for walking, watching, surfing with local knowledge, and cautious swimming rather than lazy floating.
