The last of the great temples built at Tikal, dating to around 810 AD and standing 55 metres tall. Still largely unrestored and cloaked in vegetation, Temple III gives a vivid sense of what these ruins looked like when explorers first encountered them in the 19th century. The carved lintel at the top, depicting a figure in a jaguar skin, is one of the finest surviving Maya wood carvings.
