At 65 metres, Temple IV is the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas and the highlight of any visit to Tikal. A wooden staircase and series of ladders take you to the top, where you emerge above the jungle canopy with temple roof combs poking through the green in every direction. Come at sunrise for the most atmospheric experience — the forest wakes up around you with howler monkeys and toucans. This is also the spot made famous by the Rebel Base scene in the original Star Wars film.
