The ceremonial heart of Tikal, flanked by Temple I and Temple II with the North Acropolis along its northern edge. The plaza floor consists of multiple layers of plaster laid over centuries, covering an area of about one hectare. Carved stelae and altars dot the space, recording the dynastic history of Tikal's rulers. This is where you will spend most of your time and take most of your photos — arrive at dawn before the tour groups.
