Temple of the Grand Jaguar (Temple I)

Tikal's iconic 47-metre Maya funerary pyramid from 734 AD

The iconic pyramid on the east side of the Great Plaza, rising 47 metres above the jungle floor. Built around 734 AD as a funerary temple for the ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil I, it features the classic Maya profile: a steep terraced pyramid, a single grand staircase, and a roof comb that once bore elaborate stucco decoration. Climbing Temple I itself is no longer permitted, but you can study it from the plaza or from the top of Temple II opposite.
