Place Dumas

Central square named for the Dumas family — Alexandre's grandfather lived nearby

The town's central square commemorates the Dumas family — the generals and writers descended from a marriage between a French nobleman and a Saint-Domingue slave-woman that produced one of Napoleon's best generals and, a generation later, one of the most-read novelists in history.

The square is a useful orientation point: cathedral on one side, town hall and a handful of cafés around the others.

A story
Jérémie was the birthplace of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas — the son of a French marquis and an enslaved Haitian woman, born here in 1762. He went on to become the highest-ranking person of African descent in any European army before the 20th century. His son Alexandre Dumas wrote The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, drawing characters and themes from his father's life. Hence Jérémie's nickname: the city of poets.
