Péligre Dam

Péligre Dam stands on the Artibonite River north-east of Mirebalais and creates Lake Péligre, one of Haiti's largest reservoirs. It was built in the 1950s for flood control, irrigation, and hydroelectric power, and it remains one of the country's most important pieces of infrastructure.

The dam is visually dramatic, but its story is not simply one of progress. The reservoir changed local lives, displaced people, and became part of larger arguments about development, power, and inequality in Haiti. It is worth understanding before treating the view as just another stop on a drive.

A story
Péligre Dam was promoted as a national development project, promising flood control, irrigation, and electricity. Its legacy is more complicated: Lake Péligre displaced communities and reshaped the Artibonite valley, while debates over who benefited from the power have never fully gone away.
