Morning Fish Market

The morning fish market is the most lively scene in Petite Rivière de Nippes, running from around six in the morning until the catch is sold — usually by nine or ten. Local fishermen bring in snapper, barracuda, and smaller reef fish caught overnight. Women buy at the water's edge and carry the fish to sell at the village market or cook in their kitchens.

Coming to watch, or to buy a fish and arrange for it to be cooked, is the most direct way to engage with the community. It is the kind of unrepeatable, quiet scene that makes a detour to a place like this worth the effort.
