An extraordinary and unsettling studio-gallery in the Grand Rue neighbourhood, created by sculptor Guyodo (Jean Hébert Domond) and his collective. Atis Rezistans — "artist of resistance" — fuses human skulls and bones salvaged from mass graves and cemeteries with salvaged metal, broken machinery, and Vodou imagery to create large-scale sculptures that challenge ideas about death, power, and memory.
The studio is deliberately raw, built amid the rubble and salvage of one of Port-au-Prince's poorest neighbourhoods, and that context is part of the work. Guyodo and the other artists of the collective live and work here, and visiting means entering their world rather than a sanitised gallery space. The sculptures are by turns beautiful and deeply disturbing — this is art that takes death seriously as a material. This is not the place for the faint-hearted, but it is one of the most original artistic environments in the Caribbean. Visit with a local guide and arrange in advance.
