Semana Santa Alfombras

Comayagua's Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations are among the most spectacular in Central America. In the days leading up to Easter, artists work through the night to create elaborate alfombras — carpet pictures made from dyed sawdust, flowers, colored sand, and fruit — covering entire blocks of the historic center. The designs are detailed and complex, taking days to complete.

On Good Friday and Holy Saturday, the religious processions walk directly over the carpets, destroying them as part of the ritual. If you are anywhere in Honduras during Holy Week, Comayagua is worth a detour. Accommodation books out well in advance; plan accordingly.

A story
Comayagua's Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations are among the most elaborate in Central America. In the days before Easter, teams of artists create intricate alfombras — carpet pictures made from dyed sawdust, flowers, and other natural materials — across the streets of the historic center. The processions then walk directly over them, destroying weeks of work in minutes. The impermanence is the point.
