Iguana Research and Breeding Station

The Iguana Research and Breeding Station, on a quiet lane just inland from the main road, runs a long-running conservation programme for Utila's endemic swamper iguana, the Ctenosaura bakeri. The compound has open-air enclosures with iguanas of all sizes, and the staff give informal tours explaining the breeding work and the threats the species faces in the mangrove swamps where it lives.

It is a modest set-up — a few enclosures, a small visitor centre — but it makes for a good half-hour stop, particularly with children. There is a small entry fee that goes back into the project.

A story
The swamper, or wishiwilly, is found only on Utila. By the 1990s hunting for food had pushed it close to extinction. The German-led breeding station behind Mamey Lane is the reason the species still exists, with a wild population now in the low thousands.
