Pumpkin Hill

Pumpkin Hill is the highest point on the island, an extinct volcanic cone on the north coast covered in scrubby forest. The climb to the top takes around twenty minutes from the car park and rewards you with a 360-degree view over the island, the lagoon, the reef, and on a clear day all the way to Roatán.

The road out from town takes about half an hour by bicycle or scooter and runs past mangrove swamps and farmland. The small beach below the hill is wild and largely empty, with a couple of sea caves to swim into when the water is calm.

A story
Pumpkin Hill is the highest point on Utila at all of 82 metres, the remains of an extinct volcano. The story most often told on the island is that pirates buried treasure in the caves at its base, and a few people have spent serious time looking. None of it has ever been found.
