Water Cay

Water Cay is a tiny, palm-fringed island twenty minutes off Utila by boat, on the southern edge of the reef. The water is shallow and turquoise, the snorkelling is good, and there is a small bar that opens when a boat turns up. Day trips run from town and most dive shops will drop snorkellers there for the afternoon.

The neighbouring Pigeon and Suc-Suc cays, with their colourful stilt houses, are home to a small community of fishermen and are worth a slow walk through before the boat home.

A story
Water Cay was one of the small islands along Utila's southwest reef where, in the 18th and 19th centuries, the descendants of mainland slaves and stranded sailors set up fishing camps. The Cayos Cochinos and the Utila cays are still home to a Garifuna and Bay Islander community whose Creole English you will hear on the boats over.
