Manchester Club

The Manchester Club sits on the edge of town and runs a tidy nine-hole golf course, the oldest in Jamaica. Greens fees are very modest by Caribbean standards and the course is rarely crowded; you can usually walk on. The fairways are short and tight, the greens slow, and the views toward the surrounding hills surprisingly fine.

Tennis courts and a small clubhouse round out the facilities. Drop in for lunch even if you don't play — the club terrace is a pleasant lunch spot with a view, and a small reminder of the British Jamaica that has otherwise mostly vanished.

A story
Founded in 1868, the Manchester Club's golf course is the oldest in the western hemisphere outside the United States. The course was laid out by British soldiers stationed in the hills for the climate, and the design and small bungalow clubhouse have changed little since.
