The central square of Mandeville is the spiritual centre of town: an English-style village green, complete with low stone walls and a few old courthouse buildings. It is rare in Jamaica — most towns are organised around a market and a main road, not a manicured lawn — and Mandeville's English air starts here.
On the east side of the green is the old courthouse, on the west the parish church, and around the perimeter a handful of stalls selling fruit and pastries. The atmosphere is unhurried and the elevation (around 600 m) keeps the air pleasantly cool even at midday. It's the natural starting point for a walk around town.
