Lime Cay

Small uninhabited sand cay reached by boat from Port Royal

A few kilometres east of Port Royal, Lime Cay is a tiny uninhabited island of white sand and a few palm trees in clear shallow water. Local boatmen run trips out from the Port Royal dock, particularly on weekends, when the cay fills up with families from Kingston picnicking and swimming.

There are no facilities — bring your own water, food, and shade. The snorkelling on the windward side is reasonable, though the reef has suffered from overuse. The cay also has a small footnote in Jamaican history: the gangster Ivanhoe "Rhygin" Martin was shot here in 1948, a story which forms the basis of the 1972 film The Harder They Come.
