El Vallecito is the strongest reason to leave central Tecate for the surrounding mountains. The archaeological site sits near La Rumorosa, among granite boulders and desert scrub, and protects a group of painted rock shelters associated with the Indigenous peoples of northern Baja.
Only a few panels are normally open to visitors, but that is enough. The best-known shelter, often called Cueva del Indio, gives a glimpse of a much older landscape than the border roads and maquiladoras suggest. Go early if you can; the heat and light get harsh later in the day.
