The Peña is the exposed core of an ancient volcano and one of the tallest freestanding rock masses in Mexico. A marked path climbs from the edge of the village to the chapel and viewpoints below the technical upper rock; beyond that, the route is for climbers with proper gear.
Go early, bring water, and treat the descent with respect. Even if you do not climb far, the rock is magnificent from the lower trail and from the streets below.
